Whilst working with clients a lot of time is spent discussing all aspects of preparing for a trip, from servicing the truck through to equipment for it as well as general travel tips. I would be lying if I said the information flow was all one way. Yes, I have done an 'overlanding' trip (if a month driving round Morocco counts), but beyond that my experience is limited to following and getting involved in overlanding and Land Cruiser related forums as well as numerous conversations with Clients who have either been overlanding before or have been researching their own trip for years.
I have learnt a lot over the years planning our trip as well as helping others plan theirs and probably the most important thing I have learnt is that there aren't any hard and fast rules. One person will say you need a roof tent, whilst another will say it isn't necessary. Someone else will say you have to have a manual, not an automatic, whereas others will say it doesn't matter.
So, what I plan to do over the coming weeks/months is to publish a series of articles covering all aspect of preparing for a trip, providing both sides of the arguements (if there are any) so that you make up your own minds based on your circumstances, budget and destination.
So, watch this space....
